Best Practices for Subleasing

When you sign a lease, there is, unfortunately, no way to pause it when you don’t plan to stay there, such as college students moving home for the summer. Subleasing is the alternative to pausing your lease in which the leaseholder allows someone else to live in their place while they’re away with the expectation that the subtenant will be responsible for paying rent and utilities, or at least a large portion of them.

There are many motivations for both subleasers and sublessees to go this route.

Pros of being a subleaser:

  • Don’t have to pay rent/utilities on an empty home
  • Don’t have to break your lease
  • You get to return to a guaranteed place after being away

Pros of being a subtenant:

  • Great for short-term stays
  • Can negotiate for lower rent prices
  • Allows you to get a feel for where you’re living without committing

Despite the advantages of subleasing, as is true with anything, there are some negative aspects that subleasers and subtenants alike worry about. A good way to qualm some of these nerves is to sign a sublease agreement. Similar to a lease, a sublease agreement outlines the expectations for the sublease and includes everything from the length of stay to rent price. However, a lot of these sublease agreements are quite wordy and hard to understand.

We know that you want subleasing to be as efficient and simple as possible, so we made a sublease agreement that fits that. It’s casual, easy to read/understand, and customizable to your needs. This sublease agreement is perfect for if you are subleasing to a friend or person you know. It gets the job done and then some, covering all the bases with some room for fun.
